The dirham is the currency of the United Arab Emirates and one of the most common short-trip currencies from Delhi. Malls and hotels take cards, but cash is useful in souks, taxis, at abras on Dubai Creek and for small purchases.

Travel tips

  • Bargaining is normal in the gold and spice souks, and you will usually get a better price paying in cash.
  • Metro and bus fares use a Nol card, which you can top up with cash at stations.
  • Keep a few 5 and 10 dirham notes for taxis and tips.

AED questions

Which dirham notes will I receive?

We stock 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 dirham notes, subject to stock on the day.

Is a transit stop in Dubai enough to buy dirhams?

Your air ticket must support the trip. Our team reviews the ticket and documents before fulfilment.

Should I buy dirhams in India or in Dubai?

Buying before you leave lets you see the full price in rupees, including taxes and fees, before you pay. Airport counters abroad usually charge more.
